Posing 101: How to Pose for the Perfect Photo

We believe that the right combination of elements can help to create the perfect photo. During a photography session, the importance of factors such as the right space, adequate lighting, furniture, hair, and make-up, should never go overlooked. When prioritized effectively, these elements can help you and your photographer to set the foundation for a successful photoshoot.

The final and arguably one of the most important factors is having the right pose or series of poses. With proper posture, a radiant smile and direction from a seasoned photographer, you can strike a pose that channels confidence long after the photoshoot is complete.

In this article, we take a closer look at how you can pose for the perfect photo with tips and tricks to keep in mind throughout your professional photoshoot.

Lift Your Chin

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. We believe in capturing images of men and women in their raw and most beautiful forms through photography that is both candid and real. With this being said, we can also understand that when a person's face is looking too far to the ground, it can result in an unnatural and unflattering double chin.

Our rule of thumb is that if something cannot be changed within five seconds, that we would prefer to capture it in the photos. For instance, a tummy that once provided a home for a newborn baby or scars that radiate strength, power and courage. These are wonderful examples of features that we would absolutely want to capture in a photography session, as they are part of who you are.

On the other hand, a stray piece of hair or pimple that is growing by the second may want to be fixed prior to or removed from the photos entirely. If your face has a significantly different appearance when lifted upwards rather than straight down, we may prompt you to slightly lift your face upward for a more natural and flattering position.

Laugh Out Loud

It’s hard to deny the difference between a “cheese” smile and a genuinely candid laugh. To help capture your energy, character and sheer happiness, try laughing out loud. More often than not, this forced laugh will result in the real laugh that leaves your cheeks pink, teeth shining and eyes sparkling with joy.

Use Props

Do you feel awkward in front of the camera? Give yourself purpose with the use of props. We suggest bringing or using props that are connected to the direction of the photoshoot in some way or another.

For instance, holding a laptop, notebook or coffee mug can help to provide the finishing touches for your branding photography session, while a family heirloom or ultrasound photo can help to guide you through an engagement, family or maternity photoshoot.

Other props that you may want to consider can include a:

  • Hat

  • Bag

  • Drink

  • Camera

  • Phone

  • Notebook

  • Pet

  • Glasses

Which props will be helpful to you during your next photoshoot?

Practice in the Mirror

Before striking a pose in front of the camera, we suggest doing so with the mirror first!

Practicing your poses can provide you with the opportunity to see what looks most natural and flattering for you. It can also help you remember what to do with your hands, feet and face during certain poses. While you’re practicing, you may also want to try a few different smiles and angles, keeping the location and surroundings of your photoshoot in mind!

When in doubt, ask for help.
